Roads Not Chosen

Some roads in life are consciously chosen –others are not chosen, but you travel them anyway.

I embarked on that unchosen road on July 29, 1972 when I said “I do” to Randy.  My new husband, Randy, was at that time a skeptical seminary student giving God’s call for his life a “try”.  Although my life’s dream did not include being a minister’s wife–it did happen.

On that day, at that altar in the Friendship United Methodist Church in my hometown, during the prayer,  Randy turned to me and said these now infamous words…”We won’t ever be rich, but you won’t ever be bored.”

You must know that at that moment, God put two very different people together and set them upon a life path.  Randy is ADD with an attitude, type A personality, direct, a linebacker personality, go for the goal ( you get it).  I am calm (most of the time), low key, go along to get along, and make everyone happy.

With this background, we set out on the ride of a lifetime serving God while experiencing the most unusual, poignant, hilarious and yet touching experiences most of the time carrying friends, family, and congregations along.

If you want to follow, please do.

  3. Hey! I love this (never be bored ). Randy was a good friend and a real football player! Loved his folks. Had a banana tree in side patio.

  4. Diane, I heard you speak at LNO at Mt. Bethel recently and appreciate you sharing some of the pages of your life. You were so gracious, entertaining and real – therefore inspiring! I’m looking forward to following your new blog!

  8. “We were never rich but never bored….. “. Truer words were never spoken. The “rewards” and “riches” for Methodist preachers are in heaven, not here. Julian served 43 years as a Georgia Methodist preacher. After 18 years of retirement, we still aren’t rich or bored. We may not get those 2am phone calls, unless it’s from our own family, but we are still in Ministry. Though I never wanted to be a Preacher’s Wife (being a PK), God has blessed us with good friends, great experiences, and a life of mostly JOY! May you and Randy experience the same. We miss you, but we know God isn’t finished with you yet! Love you both, and are so blessed that you were our Pastor for 10 years.

  9. We are so thankful that you two came our way and stayed for a while. Such a pleasure to get to know you and become friends. We will always remember the years we shared with you and your family .

  10. What else does one say, who doesn’t know what to say, other than to say, “We love you. We ALL love you.
    Thank you for just being
    ‘Diane,’ ?”
God bless, our sweet and precious friend!??

  11. Have thought about you and Randy a lot these past weeks. Wishing you great joy and happiness on this new road you are traveling. Diane I am sure I will run in to you at some shopping venue soon!!!!

  12. Diane… I am looking forward to sharing your memories. I, too, have some sweet memories of growing up in Madison and Randy & his family were neighbors. 🙂

  13. Yes, I’ll be following along! As a member of Mt. Bethel, I’ve followed along in your journey since 2007! We know that your husband has prayed us through some very dark days and we’ve come out on the other side with God in front of us, all of the way.

David and I are thankful for the road you both chose, and we have enjoyed the blessings that your road brought when it intertwined with ours.

    God Bless you both!
